CARD depends on grants and donations to support the work we do.
After the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) screenings during 2000 and 2001 identified the elevated prevalence of lung diseases, it became apparent to the community that long-term screening and specialty care needed to be established in Libby. CARD has an ongoing grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ATSDR to continue this service.
What Does my Donation Support?
Donated funds are used for non-grant activities including but not limited to research on environmental asbestos exposure, capital improvements, advocacy and professional fees.
Ongoing Research
Ongoing research is being done on amphibole asbestos exposures because most medical knowledge was based on exposure to a different commercial type of asbestos called chrysotile. Asbestos exposure in Libby was primarily an environmental exposure, and there is ongoing research needed to fully understand the long-term health impacts on those who were exposed.

Our Accomplishments
CARD and our participants have contributed significantly to the scientific understanding of Libby Amphibole and asbestos in general, as well as the diseases they cause. Please see our Health Library to view peer reviewed articles written by CARD and its collaborators.
CARD’s screening program has been successful in the early detection of asbestos related disease (ARD) and lung cancer resulting from the Libby asbestos exposure public health emergency.

Our Services
- Grant funded medical screening for those exposed in the Libby area no matter where they now live. This includes:
- Outside radiology evaluation of every image taken during the screening process by a B-reader or thoracic radiologist.
- Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) for those who meet age requirements.
- Autoimmune marker testing.
- Lung Cancer Screening for high-risk individuals.
- Smoking cessation program.
- Outreach and education on asbestos at local, regional, and nationwide levels.
- Consultation for providers who may be screening or treating those exposed to asbestos from Libby outside of the Superfund site.
- Research on Libby Amphibole (asbestos) fibers, how they cause disease, patterns of disease, and possible avenues of treatment.
- Advocacy, case management, and community resources.
