CARD's primary goal is to provide specialty healthcare and screening to those affected by Libby amphibole asbestos. CARD's secondary goal is to stimulate research from around the country to gain further understanding of disease mechanisms, improve early disease and cancer detection and intervention, and develop effective health management strategies in hope of finding answers to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities.

The Center for Asbestos Related Disease (CARD) is a not-for-profit specialty asbestos clinic devoted to healthcare, research, and outreach to benefit all people impacted by exposure to Libby amphibole asbestos. This organization evolved in 2000 as a response to raised awareness of widespread asbestos exposure in Libby, Montana. The short history of CARD has involved rapid change and growth. The local focus that resulted in the conception of CARD quickly evolved to a national and global focus as exposure across the nation was realized. Collaborative research activities also emerged and have continually picked up momentum in efforts to further understand exposure risk and Libby amphibole asbestos diseases which will provide needed foundation for the discovery of improved diagnostic tools, interventions, and treatments for asbestos related diseases.

CARD's mission is to provide long-term screening, health monitoring, disease diagnosis, specialized asbestos healthcare, and counseling to all people impacted by Libby amphibole asbestos. In addition, CARD provides outreach, advocacy, disease prevention and research to benefit all people impacted by asbestos. With the support of a volunteer community based Board of Directors, the CARD is fulfilling its vision of establishing a comprehensive and holistic approach to healthcare services, treatment, and research for those affected by Libby amphibole asbestos.

CARD staff consists of a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, a clinical social worker, and office/administrative support staff. Comprehensive and holistic healthcare services is CARD's commitment to the community which includes specialty care and screening for asbestos related disease, disease management services, education, counseling, resource information, problem solving assistance, advocacy, and outreach for asbestos health issues. All of these services are available in Libby, Montana through working with the professional and friendly staff at CARD. CARD is located within the Libby medical community corridor at 214 East 3rd Street, on the corner of East 3rd Street and Louisiana Avenue.

CARD is involved in collaborative projects with many prestigious research partners from around the nation. Although patient care is always the number one priority of CARD; the board, staff, and Libby community have embraced the opportunity to promote research activities to further the understanding of Libby amphibole asbestos diseases. It is recognized that research is essential to understand exposure risk and to find improved interventions and treatments that will benefit those exposed in Libby and across the nation. CARD's primary research objective is to facilitate effective types of health-related research within the Libby community in a way that will be beneficial and respectful to community members and researchers. CARD and the Libby community realize that “CARD Research is a Community Project”. The time is now to move from Crisis to Cure.
